The best thing to do is make beef stock yourself but this can be time consuming. I don't like to use oxo or other stock cubes as they have a lot of added salt and preservatives. I read in a magazine that "Knorr Simply Stock" was the best alternative to home made as it contains only natural ingredients and nothing else. I now use this all the time. They do it in vegetable, chicken and beef varieties. For a quick gravy I bring the stock to the boil and thicken it with a paste of cornflour and water, not as quick as gravy granules but a lot healthier!
